Hospitals face new challenges in the healthcare arena, particularly the proliferation of outpatient care and physician owned facilities. As a consequence, outpatient imaging, which is critical to hospital profits, is at risk. There are new players, including investors, entrepreneurs and private and public companies seeking to own and operate free standing imaging centers. Such centers are in direct competition with hospital-based outpatient radiology departments.
